To the saying, "The West Coast is the best coast," you'll get no argument from me when it comes to PGA Tour golf swings. The five-week stretch that began in La Quinta, Calif., and concluded in Pacific Palisades builds to a crescendo with a string of architectural gems such as Torrey Pines, Pebble Beach and Riviera Country Club. With the Florida Swing playing a man down now that Doral is out of the rota, it's probably a 3-and-2 victory closed out on the par-3 16th in front of 20,000 rabid fans at TPC Scottsdale. What did we learn on the West Coast before the Tour packed up the big tent for the Sunshine State? Quite a lot, as it turns out:
Number of victories at the Chubb Classic, in three career appearances, for Fred Couples, who shot 16-under 200 for a three-stroke victory Sunday at TwinEagles Club in Naples, Fla. It was the 12th career title for Couples on the PGA Tour Champions, and the first since 2014 for the World Golf Hall of Fame member.
Number of victories in her past 22 starts on the LPGA for South Korea’s Ha Na Jang, who shot 10-under 282 to win the ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open. She played the final six holes at Royal Adelaide Golf Club in 5 under, including an eagle-birdie finish on Nos. 17 and 18, to pull away from runner-up Nanna Koerstz Madsen.
Number of victories on the European Tour for Brett Rumford, who won the inaugural ISPS Handa World Super 6 Perth in his native Perth, Australia. Rumford, who lost his tour playing privileges last year, led all three days of stroke play and then swept four matches in the match/stroke format at Lake Karrinyup Country Club. He capped the wire-to-wire victory with a 2-and-1 victory against Thai 17-year-old Phachara Khongwatmai in the final.
|Length, in feet, of the putt that Andrew Putnam made in a playoff against Chris Baker to win the Panama Claro Championship. They had tied at 13-under 267 at Panama Golf Club.
