The WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play is golf's version of March Madness, and it can be as maddening to pick a golf bracket that doesn't quickly go bust as it is in the NCAA basketball tournament. (I rank somewhere in the 7 millions on espn.com.)

So for a little expert analysis on what it will take to survive and advance through golf's ultimate grind this week at Austin (Texas) Country Club, I quizzed two formidable former Match Play champs, Geoff Ogilvy and Ian Poulter, for their insights.

"Match play," Ogilvy said, "is completely in the head."

On the first day of spring, Tiger Woods finally came out of hibernation.

Woods appeared Monday at the Barnes & Noble on Union Square in midtown Manhattan to sign a few hundred copies of his new book, “The 1997 Masters: My Story.” It was his first public appearance since early February, when he withdrew from the Omega Dubai Desert Classic.

Woods’ WD after a first-round 77 in Dubai, continuing back spasms and a decision not to play last week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational, an event that he has won eight times, all had been communicated on his website or via social media.

The best golfer of the late 20th – and, thus far, the 21st – century, and a formidable factor in the contentious argument about “the greatest of all time” treated his book signing Monday much as he treated the public and the media throughout his incredible career.

Tiger Woods, whose book “The 1997 Masters: My Story” (256 pages, Grand Central Publishing) was released Monday, made a brief and unprecedented public appearance at Barnes & Noble’s Union Square location in New York.

In the news

FILED: By warehouse club Costco, a lawsuit March 17 in U.S. District Court in Seattle, against golf-equipment manufacturer Acushnet. Costco claims that it has not infringed on any patents held by Acushnet, the maker of the Titleist brand of golf balls, and that it has not falsely advertised its Kirkland Signature golf balls. According to the lawsuit, Acushnet sent Costco “a threatening letter” in response to the KS golf balls, which the Kirkland Signature guarantee states “meet or exceed the quality standards of leading national brands.” The balls sold out quickly nationwide at $15 per dozen.

REVERSED: Under pressure from Olympic officials, the membership policy at Tokyo’s Kasumigaseki Country Club, which will allow women to hold full golf privileges. The club was selected to host the golf competition at the 2020 Tokyo Games.

DIED: Ken Still, a three-time winner on the PGA Tour who played in the 1969 Ryder Cup matches, of kidney failure Sunday night in his hometown of Tacoma, Wash., according to The News Tribune of Tacoma. He was 82.
