Lee Elder's life still revolves around golf.

The first black man to compete in the Masters, in 1975, Elder, 82, complained that he forgot his brace and his right knee ached, so he begged off when asked by participants in a shotgun outing to poke a few drives. He was at the World Golf Hall of Fame recently for a Q&A and reception, which followed afternoon golf at The Slammer & The Squire. It was part of a concerted and well-intentioned effort by the hall to honor February’s Black History Month, but it couldn't disguise the fact that only one of the 150 hall members is black. That won't change when the five newest inductees are honored Sept. 26 at the biennial ceremony in New York.

That’s more than enough, Duf

Totally agree with you on Jason Dufner (“When it comes to sportsmanship, Dufner is a slouch,” April 17, bit.ly/2nWXI9T). All of the guys at our club do not like him because of his poor attitude, boring look, and he is just not exciting to watch.

Dufner comes across as being unappreciative of his fortunate lifestyle.

He thinks his cavalier look is cool, but it is really stupid. Not getting excited about an eagle, great birdie or tough par-saving putt is his mantra, and it gets old to watch. Give me Jordan Spieth, Sergio Garcia, Phil Mickelson and others any time. They are fun to watch, and we can relate to these guys.

Keeping score

11

Number of starts that Charley Hoffman has made in the Valero Texas Open, where he has never missed the cut and returns to TPC San Antonio’s AT&T Oaks Course this week as the defending champion. Hoffman has finished nine times among the top 15 in San Antonio.
