Any hope that Tiger Woods might have held of playing tournament golf in 2017 likely is finished.

Woods announced Thursday on his website that he underwent a fourth back surgery to alleviate pain. The operation, described as a minimally invasive anterior lumbar interbody fusion, was done in Plano, Texas.

"The surgery went well, and I'm optimistic this will relieve my back spasms and pain," Woods said in a statement on Tigerwoods.com. "When healed, I look forward to getting back to a normal life, playing with my kids, competing in professional golf and living without the pain I have been battling so long."

Last week's #SB2K17 at Baker's Bay in the Bahamas – the annual "bro-cation" of Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, Justin Thomas and Smylie Kaufman documented on SnapChat and other social-media outlets – proved that just like in the movies, the sequel never is as good as the original.

Perhaps the biggest LOL moment was none other than a reply tweet from the 81-year-old ageless wonder Gary Player, pictured alone on a beach, still waiting for his invite.

Walker Cup without mid-amateurs would alter captaincy

Really great article on mid-amateurs on the Walker Cup team (“Is there still a place for mid-amateurs in Walker Cup?” April 20, bit.ly/2oPpFPP).

One other key element that might be missed is the selection process for Walker Cup captain. The USGA always has made the selection from former Walker Cuppers. If you don’t have any mid-ams on the team, where is the pool of potential captains then going to come from years from now?

Keeping score

6

Strokes under par for American Bubba Watson, who shot 66 on Thursday to lead the suspended first round of the European Tour’s Shenzhen International at Genzon Golf Club in Shenzhen, China. Watson, who started the season at No. 10 in the Official World Golf Ranking, has slipped to 22nd after three missed cuts and a withdrawal in seven starts this year, and no finish better than T-25 in stroke-play events.

16

Number of starts since Branden Grace, the first-round leader at the Valero Texas Open, has posted a top-10 finish on the PGA Tour. Grace, 28, of South Africa, owns 11 worldwide victories but only one in the U.S. He shot 6-under 66 on Thursday at TPC San Antonio’s AT&T Oaks Course for a one-stroke lead.

30

Percentage of overnight golf visitors to Scotland who are Americans, according to a survey conducted for Visit Scotland and Scottish Enterprise. Those Americans spend approximately £405 (about $519) per night, about 40 percent more than the typical golf tourist to Scotland.
