Jack Nicklaus isn’t playing golf this week, but in a weird way, the Memorial Tournament becomes more about him with each passing year.

He’ll hate that sentence, of course, because he wants the Memorial to be all about the great golf and eventual champion at Muirfield Village Golf Club in this suburb northwest of Columbus, not him. Arnold Palmer has come and gone, though, and time’s stark reality prompts us to cherish our remaining national treasures more than ever. Nicklaus is one of those.

Defining moments do not always involve triumph, as Roberto De Vicenzo would have attested.

For the past half-century, De Vicenzo, who died Thursday at age 94 in his native Argentina, lived with a mistake that didn’t define him but made his name synonymous with signing an incorrect scorecard.

In the final round of the 1968 Masters, De Vicenzo was waiting to find out his fate after shooting a final-round 65 to share the lead with Bob Goalby, who was playing the last hole.

Comments about Woods were unfair

I am not a big Tiger Woods fan, but I did not like your article (“Woods needs help, and his life might depend on it,” May 31, I did not think it was fair.

You do not know all of the facts or circumstances that caused Woods’ condition. To write that it was a "dereliction of responsibility" is an opinion not based on all of the facts.

The media today spout off opinions before they get all of the facts. Those opinions influence others (listeners and readers), sometimes in a negative way. This type of reporting is uncalled for, unjust and unfair. You have jumped to conclusions.

Keeping score

Number of bogeys that Chesson Hadley made during a 7-under 64 for the first-round lead Thursday in the Tour’s Rex Hospital Open at TPC Wakefield Plantation in Raleigh, N.C. Hadley, the 2014 PGA Tour rookie of the year, grew up near TPC Wakefield Plantation and estimated that he has played hundreds of rounds at the course. He leads Stephan Jaeger and Carlos Ortiz by one stroke.

Score, a bogey, on the final hole for Jason Dufner, who otherwise played flawlessly in shooting 7-under 65 for a share of the first-round leadThursday in the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. Dufner hit 17 of 18 greens, missing only the 18th, from 157 yards. He stands tied with David Lingmerth, the 2015 Memorial winner. Only four players in the 42-year history of the Memorial have hit 18 greens in regulation in a round: Don Pooley (1987, Round 3), Frank Nobilo (1997, Round 2), Freddie Jacobson (2010, Round 1) and Rory Sabbatini (2010, Round 1).

Score, 5 under par, for first-round co-leaders Renato Paratore and Max Orrin in the Nordea Masters at Barseback Golf and Country Club in Malmo, Sweden. Paratore, of Italy, and Orrin, of England, are looking for their first victories on the European Tour. Welshmen Jamie Donaldson and Bradley Dredge are tied for second at 69.

Troon has been selected to manage Columbia (Mo.) Country Club, the Scottsdale, Ariz.-based golf-management company announced. Columbia, which dates to 1921, sits on 120 acres and was renovated in 2012-13.
