Phil Mickelson likely won’t be at Erin Hills next week for his 27th U.S. Open, but his bagman, Jim Mackay, plans on making the trip to Wisconsin, just in case.

Mickelson announced at the Memorial Tournament on Saturday after his round that he plans to attend daughter Amanda’s high school graduation in California on Thursday, June 15, which conflicts with the first round of the U.S. Open (“Mickelson’s likely WD at Open exposes USGA flaw,” June 5, http://bit.ly/2qR48Vb).

Mackay wants to be prepared in case something unforeseen might occur and allow Mickelson to play.

Being that Johnny Harris is not accustomed to hearing the word “no” – or at least not paying attention to it when he does hear it – he came really close when Tom Fazio and he brought some rolled-up plans to PGA of America headquarters in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., in February 2016.

Quail Hollow Club was going to be closed for three months, beginning the day after the Wells Fargo Championship in May, for the greens to undergo a change from MiniVerde Bermudagrass to Champion Bermudagrass due to a damaging mutation in the MiniVerde.

Mickelson’s latest gamble

The real reason Phil Mickelson is telling the USGA now is not so an alternate can get ready to play (“Mickelson’s likely WD at Open exposes USGA flaw,” June 5, http://bit.ly/2qR48Vb). It’s so he will get that last or near-the-last tee time – like, around 3:15 p.m. – so if they move his daughter’s commencement up from 10 a.m. to 8 a.m. and there is a rain delay, he can make the time.

Qualified: For the U.S. Open on June 15-18 at Erin Hills in Erin, Wis., players from sectional qualifying at 10 U.S. sites Monday. The qualifiers (a-denotes amateur):

Jupiter Hills Club, Tequesta, Fla. (49 players for 3 spots): Jack Maguire (72-65–137), a-Joaquin Niemann (71-68–139), Tyson Alexander (72-67–139); alternates: a-Eugene Hong (69-70–139), Tim Wilkinson (67-74–141)

Hawks Ridge Golf Club, Ball Ground, Ga. (36 players for 2 spots): Stephan Jaeger (67-70–137), a-Alex Smalley (68-69–137); alternates: a-Davis Love IV (67-71–138), J.T. Griffin (66-72–138)

Keeping score

.01

Margin by which Lydia Ko retained her No. 1 spot Monday in the Rolex Rankings point system, according to the LPGA, which announced that projections from the world ranking Sunday night for Ariya Jutanugarn to take over the top spot were erroneous. The LPGA cited “a bug in the projection tool.” The full explanation: http://bit.ly/2rXRRCN
