On Tuesday, Jim Furyk was hosting "Operation Shower," a group baby shower for 30 military moms-to-be whose spouses are deployed, at the Travelers Championship when he checked his phone. That's when tournament director Nathan Grube noticed the shattered screen.

"I said, 'Jim, how many shards of glass do you get in your thumb?' " Grube said. "He said, 'You know, every once in a while, I have to pick one out.' "

Furyk had dropped the phone three weeks ago and had been too busy to do anything about it. Grube couldn't resist the opportunity to lend a hand.

Jon Brackett is ready for his role reversal this week.

Normally, the 47-year-old high school history teacher spends his summer working as a caddie at Erin Hills, which recently hosted the U.S. Open. This week, he’s helping train a batch of new caddies there, a task that requires him to play the course while ordering the newbies around so that they learn all of a caddie’s many duties.

Pomp and circumstance … and courtesy

I enjoyed Mike Purkey’s article (“So many questions in game that needs answers,” June 22,

One “question” to which I took serious exception was whether a “nice donation” to Phil Mickelson’s daughter’s school would’ve gotten the graduation date changed. I’d bet most parents at that school could afford a “nice donation.” However, it’d be incredibly selfish of anyone to even try and change the date of a momentous occasion for so many others, one that often involves travel and extended family, simply because it’s inconvenient for themselves.

Strokes under par for Jordan Spieth, the first-round leader Thursday in the PGA Tour’s Travelers Championship. Spieth, making his first appearance at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn., birdied five of his first eight holes. Spieth, No. 6 in the Official World Golf Ranking, leads Johnson Wagner and Brett Stegmaier by one stroke. No. 3-ranked Rory McIlroy shot 67, and No. 4 Jason Day shot 72.

HydraPak will team with Access Fund to help benefit public-land conservation. HydraPak will produce 500 limited-edition, co-branded 500ml (about 17 ounces) bottles designed by Igawa Design for Outdoor Retailer. A requested $5 donation will go to Access Fund’s conservation efforts.

Kansas City’s Northland will be the site of a 52,000-square-foot golf and entertainment complex, said officials from Troon, which will manage the property. The Metro North Cross Redevelopment will include retail, a theater, hotel and multi-family residential.
