Las Vegas oddsmakers believe that Jordan Spieth is a near-lock to win the British Open, updating the third-round leader with 1-4 odds.

It’s not worth the bet. Making $25 on a $100 wager is what is known in the business as a sucker bet.

There are subplots and sublime sub-subplots.

The early hours of the 146th British Open on Saturday featured both, plus the most entertaining run of major-championship golf since Phil Mickelson and Henrik Stenson engaged in a rollicking birdie battle 12 months ago at Troon.

After a day when British Open competitors exacted their revenge on Royal Birkdale, the question stands: What to make of Branden Grace’s 62?

Historic, absolutely, as Grace’s 8-under score in Saturday’s third round beat the 63s posted 31 previous times in major championships.

What Branden Grace didn’t know

Saturday certainly didn’t hurt him.

Without realizing that he was on the verge of history, Grace set the major-championship scoring record with a 62 in the third round of the British Open at Royal Birkdale Golf Club. The course, softened by rain the previous day, was set up at 7,027 yards from a scorecard length of 7,156 and played to a par 34-36–70. It played to a 69.0 scoring average, with 43 of the 77 competitors under par.

Number of strokes by which LPGA rookie Nelly Korda leads entering today’s final round of the Marathon Classic. Korda, the younger sister of Jessica Korda, shot 5-under 66 on Saturday at Highland Meadows Golf Club in Sylvania, Ohio, for a 15-under 198 total. In-Kyung Kim shot 68 for a 13-under 200 total. Gerina Piller (70), who led after the first two rounds, shares third place with Lexi Thompson (69) and four others at 12-under 201.
