Quick! Name the third-oldest continually running event on the PGA Tour, after the British Open and the U.S. Open.

Hint: The course where it’s being contested this week has played host to more national Opens than any other site worldwide outside of the Old Course at St. Andrews. This year’s event will mark 29, to be precise.


Be a good sport and pick up the pace 

Golfers mimic what they see the pros do. The game is losing players because a round just takes too long, and all the standing around is boring. Slow play is also poor sportsmanship. TV announcers and the PGA Tour should be pointing this out. 



Number of golfers who won the British Open and the Senior British Open in their careers: Gary Player, Bob Charles and Tom Watson. Honored: With the Dick Grimm Award for lifetime contributions to the game, Morning Read contributor John Gordon, according to the Golf Journalists Association of Canada. It is the GJAC’s highest annual award. Gordon, a former writer and editor for The Canadian Press and a former executive director of the Ontario Golf Association, has covered the game for 30-plus years in Canada as a writer and book author. His latest work, about Canada’s national open, leads this edition of Morning Read.


Hilton Head Island, S.C., announced golf packages for late-summer vacations to the Lowcountry. The packages, available through August, include such destinations as Sea Pines Resort and Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort and courses such as Harbour Town Golf Links, site of the PGA Tour’s annual RBC Heritage, Heron Point and Atlantic Dunes.


In a study cited by Aline, 18 professional golfers increased their earnings while wearing the company’s footwear suspension system. Aline cites more than 100 players, caddies and industry professionals wearing the company’s products.
