Unless the Twitter universe is wrong, the PGA Championship is going to move to May beginning in 2019, making the PGA at Bethpage State Park on Long Island the first event in the new slot.

It also means that The Players Championship will return to March after having been played for the past decade in May, allowing the PGA Tour’s season-ending Tour Championship to conclude around Labor Day and avoid competing with the NFL.

Fifty years ago, when Don January won an 18-hole playoff over fellow Texan Don Massengale for his only major championship, January was known as golf’s original "Bones," a reference to his 6-foot-1-inch, 150-pound frame. The Associated Press story detailing January's triumph described him as having "the lean, leathery looks of a movie frontier marshal."

January, 87, who won 10 times on the PGA Tour and 22 more titles on the PGA Tour Champions, says he has shrunk a couple of inches and his waistline has expanded to the point that one of his grandkids once questioned the genesis of his nickname.

The Wanamaker Trophy is the pride of the PGA of America. It is awarded annually to the winner of the PGA Championship, and the organization makes sure that every bit of information about the Wanamaker Trophy is properly disseminated.

Except this: It takes 42 cans of your favorite beer to fill the Wanamaker to the brim.

WGA program changes lives

The Western Golf Association program not only helps grow the game but gives these ladies an opportunity to chase their life dreams (“Chicago teen finds hope in Caddie Academy,” Aug. 4, http://bit.ly/2wgO9Da). There is also a program for men that houses them in Evanston, Ill. An Evans Scholarship allows them to receive an excellent education at a major university. This opens doors for higher education that most cannot afford.

Withdrawn: From the Solheim Cup, American Jessica Korda, who cited an injury to her left forearm that also prompted her to miss last week’s Women’s British Open (“Inkster plays a hunch with Solheim rookies, Aug. 7, http://bit.ly/2vGZQFd). U.S. captain Juli Inkster was traveling, the LPGA said, and would announce Korda’s replacement soon. The Solheim Cup will be played Aug. 18-20 at Des Moines Country Club in West Des Moines, Iowa. The U.S. leads the biennial series against Europe, 9-5.
