It’s that time of the year when many golfers experience match-play competitions, whether in their state and local championships or at the national and international levels such as at this week’s U.S. Amateur and the Solheim Cup.

The Rules of Golf might seem complicated to many golfers, but the rulebook tends to become even more confusing in match play. The rules differ greatly from stroke play to match play.

As the clichéd commercial asks, “What’s in your wallet?” For golfers, maybe it should be, “What’s left in your wallet?”

Three reasons for golf’s decline in America is that the game is too difficult, takes too long and costs too much.

Yes, golf is an expensive hobby when factoring green fees or club dues and the cost of gear – shoes, balls, gloves, rangefinder or GPS and clubs.

Support for Thomas and his peek at 18

I am shocked at some of the readers writing that they had a problem with Justin Thomas walking up to the green “from 80 yards … to do what?” (“From the Morning Read inbox, Aug. 15, http://bit.ly/2w7PNu7.) Clearly this couch-potato hack has no clue.

Thomas hadn't had to pitch out on 18 before and didn't have his first major on the line at age 24. How composed these young men are is simply amazing to me. No player has the nickname “Avis” anymore. Remember the late, great Payne Stewart? These guys get it done fast. Thomas needed to walk up and compose himself and get the job done, and he did great.

FROM THE INDUSTRY

The Links at Perry Cabin, a Pete Dye design in St. Michaels, Md., on the Eastern Shore, will debut in the spring, club officials announced. Dye had worked on the same site with his late brother Roy in the 1960s before the developer went bankrupt.

Gilles Gagnon, the senior golf sales director at Casa de Campo Resort and Villas, also has been named director of golf emeritus, the Caribbean resort announced. Casa de Campo, in La Romana, Dominican Republic, is home to 90 holes of golf, including the acclaimed Pete Dye-designed Teeth of the Dog. Gagnon, a Montreal native, came to Casa de Campo in 1980 as golf operations director.

Tagmarshal, a pace-of-play geo-tagging system, will be used at Carnoustie (Scotland) Golf Links, officials announced. Tagmarshal claims that its pace algorithms improve round times and enable courses to provide a consistent pace of play.

Keswick Hall and Golf Club, a resort in Virginia’s Hunt Country, is offering its Full Cry Golf Package for the fall. Prices start at $349 per night and include accommodations in Keswick Hall’s 48-room luxury hotel and unlimited play on the Pete Dye-designed Full Cry at Keswick Golf Club course.
