Golf, at its very core, is more about the players than the people who are in charge of the game. But some overseers are bigger than others, and Billy Payne is one of those.

Payne has resigned as chairman of Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters, the club announced Wednesday. His resignation, after 11 years on the job, will be effective Oct. 16, shortly after the club reopens for the fall and three days after his 70th birthday.

East vs. West could spark inspiration

As a longtime fan of the LPGA and father of a former women's collegiate golfer, I would love to see the Solheim Cup be more inclusive of the better players (“Solheim solution: LPGA/Europe vs. Korea,” Aug. 22, http://bit.ly/2wuPHwO). For the most part, these young women have known one another for a long time, beginning with junior golf and then college. The rivalries already are there.

Number of players with at least one top-10 finish in each of the past eight years of the FedEx Cup playoffs: Matt Kuchar. The four-event 2017 playoffs begin today with The Northern Trust at Glen Oaks Club in Old Westbury, N.Y. (tee times: http://bit.ly/2vYEqS0).

In the news

Announced: That he will turn pro after next month’s Walker Cup, Maverick McNealy. The recent Stanford graduate, a former college player of the year who is No. 2 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, had been mulling whether to remain an amateur and start a business career. (He majored in management science and engineering and is the son of Scott McNealy, co-founder of Sun Microsystems.) In announcing his decision on Stanford’s athletics website (http://stanford.io/2w3dqkr), McNealy said, “Through golf, I plan to earn and reinvest the resources to get more kids involved in sports.” McNealy, 21, of Portola Valley, Calif., will make his professional debut on a sponsor exemption in the Safeway Open on Oct. 5-8 in Napa, Calif., and play Web.com Tour Q-School this fall, Golfweek reported.

FROM THE INDUSTRY

Twenty PGA Tour players who use Nippon Shaft products are eligible for the FedEx Cup playoffs that begin today, the shaft maker reports. Nine of the 20 will be at this week’s The Northern Trust at Glen Oaks Club in Westbury, N.Y., according to Nippon Shaft.

Tagmarshal, a pace-of-play and field-optimizing system, is operational at Ballybunion (Ireland) Golf Club’s Old Course, a former site of the Irish Open. Courses such as Erin Hills, Whistling Straits, Valhalla, Carnoustie and Kiawah Island are among the sites that use the data-transmitting device.

Carr Golf, a tour operator in Ireland and Scotland, will host the inaugural Donald Ross Invitational Tournament on Oct. 8-12 at Royal Dornoch Golf Club in Scotland. Rates for the package start at $3,425 per person, based on the current exchange rate, for the two-person team event. The package includes three rounds at Royal Dornoch, architect Ross’ boyhood course, and a practice round at nearby Brora Golf Club.
