by Gary Van Sickle

The eyeball test is valid. That’s why it was amusing early this year when the U.S. Golf Association and the R&A issued a report that effectively patted themselves on the back for getting golf’s distance crisis under control (http://bit.ly/2lP03ih).

I hope those ladies and gents watched golf this year. Under control? Excuse me, but what I’ve seen is that golf is well into Happy Gilmore territory.

A closer look at the playoff formula

While I agree with some of what Gary Van Sickle discusses in the FedEx Cup playoff article, I disagree with two points (“FedEx Cup Payoffs: It’s time to cash in,” Aug. 23, http://bit.ly/2g6QKMq).

First, he indicated that “I have yet to hear one fan or one fellow writer talk about the points and discuss who needs what to advance to the next event.”

Number of competitors in the U.S. Senior Amateur, which begins this weekend, who competed in last week’s U.S. Amateur. Matthew Sughrue of Arlington, Va., who was runner-up in the 2016 Senior Amateur, and New York’s George Zahringer, the 2002 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion, missed the cut for match play last week. Stroke-play qualifying in the 63rd U.S. Senior Amateur begins Saturday at Minikahda Club in Minneapolis. Dave Ryan of Taylorville, Ill., is the defending champion (tee times: http://bit.ly/2w2vdtR).

Committed: To play in the East Lake Cup, the eight teams from the men’s and women’s match-play semifinals in the 2017 NCAA Championship, according to Golf Channel, which will televise the matches this fall. Defending men’s champion Oklahoma will be joined by runner-up Oregon, Illinois and Vanderbilt, and defending women’s champion Arizona State will be joined by runner-up Northwestern, Stanford and Southern California for the Oct. 30-Nov. 1 match-play event at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.
