It’s time to start thinking about golf’s Player of the Year for 2017. Who gets my vote? His initials are TBD.

Yeah, To Be Determined. It is still up for grabs.

My criterion for picking a POY, as lazy media hacks like to call the award, is simple. I rely on the great philosopher Tiger Woods, who said, “It’s all about the W’s.”

It’s time to limit the golf ball

The distance and straight-flight characteristics of today’s golf balls need to be dealt with (“Distance data come up short against reality,” Aug. 25, http://bit.ly/2vGwgw2).

The distances obtained by today’s professional and top amateur golfers are making a fallacy of the game and have turned many top courses into pitch-and-putt layouts. Watching non-major tournaments isn’t all that exciting for the seasoned golf fan as the events have turned into dart-throw or target practice.

In the news

Withdrew: From this week’s Dell Technologies Championship, Henrik Stenson, according to Associated Press golf writer Doug Ferguson, who reported that Stenson attributed the move to tightness in a knee. Stenson won the 2013 event, when it was known as the Deutsche Bank Championship. Because he ranks No. 22 in the FedEx Cup standings, he will qualify for next week’s 70-man BMW Championship, the third of four playoff events. This week’s field, originally set at 100, will be reduced to 96 after Brandt Snedeker, J.B. Holmes and Scott Piercy also withdrew (tee times: http://bit.ly/2xvQI4H)

Respective FedEx Cup rankings of Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas, who will be paired in Friday’s first round of the Dell Technologies Championship at TPC Boston in Norton, Mass. (tee times: http://bit.ly/2xvQI4H).

Galvin Green has introduced its autumn/winter Insula Lite line of lightweight performance outerwear, the company announced. The performance fabric uses built-in air chambers warmed by body heat, allowing excess heat and moisture to escape for an ideal body temperature, the manufacturer claims.

Ryan Bearss, a student at Michigan State, will received the Mendenhall Award of $6,000 in the 2017 Scholars Competition offered through the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, the GCSAA announced. The program was developed to recognize outstanding students who are pursuing careers in golf-course management. Bearss, of Farmington Hills, Mich., intends to start graduate school at Michigan State in January.

R. Scott Woodhead, the associate director of member relations for the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, has resigned after 15 years on the GCSAA’s staff, the association announced. The resignation will be effective Sept. 15.

Streamsong Resort, GolfNow and TaylorMade are sponsoring a contest to offer a trip for two to play golf with Dustin Johnson at the central Florida resort’s newest course, the Gil Hanse-designed Black course.
