High-profile caddies such as Michael Greller and Colin Swatton are likely to get a lot of face time this week during the broadcast of the BMW Championship at Conway Farms Golf Club outside Chicago.

But the third FedEx Cup playoff event, formerly known as the Western Open (1899-2006), isn’t about the famous caddies operating inside the ropes. It’s about the caddies outside the ropes.

A tale of two tours

I enjoyed your interview with Juli Inkster and the future of the LPGA (“Inkster: Female golfers deserve better,” Sept. 11).

Women's golf is in a great place right now, and it's on the rise with stars such as Lexi Thompson and Brooke Henderson. Having said that, it's simple supply and demand.

In the news

Hunkered down: Ernie Els, who withdrew from this week’s KLM Open in the Netherlands so that he can help family and friends in south Florida deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, which swept through the state late Sunday and early Monday. In a statement, Els said that his “first concern at the moment and the coming days is to support my family and our friends and staff at Els for Autism. We must be ready for the consequences of this terrible storm.” Els, a four-time major champion, and his wife Liezl, whose son Ben is autistic, built The Els Center of Excellence, a school for autistic children, near their home in south Florida. The school, like most Florida businesses, closed because of the storm.

Keeping score

5

Number of times that the late Walter Hagen won the Western Open, forerunner to the BMW Championship that will be played this week at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Ill. (tee times: http://bit.ly/2xt4sjU). Hagen won the Western in three decades: 1916, 1921, 1926, 1927 and 1932. The Western ran from 1899 to 2006. Only the British Open and U.S. Open were older.
