The Ryder Cup is special because only in team match-play events does every shot matter to every spectator. Thanks to the inherent nationalism, everyone has a rooting interest, for or against, which makes it so fun.

In a typical stroke-play tournament, whether Dustin Johnson or Rory McIlroy makes a birdie or a bogey is no sweat off your brow. You don’t live or die with every stroke.

Unless you have money bet on them. Then, you are interested. You are very interested.

It’s up to LPGA to boost interest

When you look at the TV ratings for the LPGA, they are very low. Statistically, very few women watch the LPGA or sports in general. How does the LPGA get better ratings? Get more women to watch. This is never discussed by the LPGA. The blame always seems to be toward men (“Inkster: Female golfers deserve better,” Sept. 11, http://bit.ly/2xhZIwL).

I watch, but I am in the industry. Ratings dictate TV contracts and advertising. The LPGA has to get its ratings up. A few dual tournaments with the PGA Tour with split-screen TV coverage would help immensely.

5-1

Odds of tournament favorite Jordan Spieth to win this week’s Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, according to golfodds.com. Dustin Johnson is the second choice, at 7-1, followed by Rickie Fowler (8-1). Jason Day, Jon Rahm and Justin Thomas are listed at 10-1 (tee times: http://bit.ly/2d5pHyV; reset FedEx Cup standings: http://bit.ly/Wy720S; FedEx Cup scenarios: http://bit.ly/2xbxmV7).

In the news

Announced: By the U.S. Golf Association, that it will move the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur from Quail Creek Country Club in Naples, Fla., where Hurricane Irma left widespread damage Sept. 10. No new venue was disclosed. Last week, the USGA had announced that the tournament would be postponed from its original Oct. 7-12 dates, without providing further details (“In the news,” Sept. 13, http://bit.ly/2fikrtC).
