Will this be another week of what some detractors refer to as “Ryder Cup lite” or the birth of a rivalry at the Presidents Cup?

To put it in terms that recent FedEx Cup champion Justin Thomas, a rookie in this biennial team competition, would understand, the Presidents Cup to date has been a lot like the Alabama-Vanderbilt rivalry. Let's hope this rendition is a little closer than Thomas' Crimson Tide rolling to a 59-0 victory on Saturday. The American side owns a 9-1-1 record. In 1998, when the Internationals posted their lone victory, Thomas and American teammates Jordan Spieth and Daniel Berger were not long out of diapers.

Ask anybody involved in professional golf: a bad shot, bad hole, bad round, bad tournament – even a bad year – is never the player’s fault. A noise in the crowd, a ball in a divot hole, changing wind, a stupid pin position, a tough pairing or a wretched spike mark left by another player are all reasons for touring pros to get negative results.

Then, there’s the caddie. He talks too much or not enough or talks too soon or too late or can’t be on time, can’t read putts and can’t even do simple math. So, because you can’t fire the player, guess who gets the ax? Yes, sir; it’s the caddie.

Skimping on serious coverage

I’m just so sad when I open GolfChannel.com and the pictures are usually women in bikinis. And you wonder why people don’t watch women’s golf.

Golf Channel has dumbed them down to NASCAR posters.

Stroke-play qualifying will narrow the field to 64 players, who will play nine-hole stroke-play matches to reduce the field to the eventual champion.
