Much has changed with the PGA of America’s approach to the Ryder Cup since the organization appointed a task force to create a winning formula. Not so long ago, the PGA’s public-relations department loved to play a cat-and-mouse game with the golf media regarding the announcement of Ryder Cup captains. Now, the future order of captains is highly predictable.

A good first step to honor Louis

At brevity's sake, a starting point is difficult, but your piece lauding Joe Louis and his contributions – golf-related and beyond – is poorly initiated by affronts to the Red Wings and the Mike Ilitch family (“Will Detroit answer bell for Brown Bomber?” Oct. 5, http://bit.ly/2fUHonj). Slap-in-the-face references to the destruction of Joe Louis Arena and the “lavish, sparkling new … Little Caesars Arena” are inane non sequiturs to the objective of your piece. Your apology should hasten.
