It is not my fault the U.S. Golf Association is such an easy target. I’m not the one responsible for getting it wrong on metal woods, the ball, square grooves and the Dustin Johnson ruling that almost ruined the U.S. Open at Oakmont, to name just a few.

Here’s the latest Great Idea from the USGA: awarding spots in the U.S. Open to the winners of the U.S. Junior Amateur and the U.S. Mid-Amateur championships (“In the news,” Oct. 6, http://www.morningread.com/).

Politics and the Ryder Cup

Very nice article, but excuse me if I don’t share the enthusiasm (“Stricker points Ryder Cup in new direction,” Oct. 6, http://bit.ly/2y9EQb8). I lost faith in the process a long time ago.

When Larry Nelson, a great golfer and an American hero, got passed over many times for Ryder Cup captaincy by the PGA of America, I understood this was nothing more than politics, and that was the day the Ryder Cup became a lousy exhibition to me.

Number of Ladies European Tour victories for American Cristie Kerr, who gave herself an early 40th-birthday present with a four-stroke victory Sunday in the Lacoste Ladies French Open. Kerr, a 19-time winner on the LPGA, closed with a 1-under 69 at Golf de Chantaco in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, France, for a 17-under 263 total. Her 40th birthday is Thursday. China’s Xi Yu Lin (64) placed second at 13-under 267, followed by Spain’s Azahara Munoz (69) at 8-under 272. American Beth Allen, a longtime LET player, tied for ninth (scores: http://bit.ly/2hXuW6G).

In the news

Suspended: The second round of stroke-play qualifying in the U.S. Mid-Amateur, because of inclement weather from the remnants of Hurricane Nate on Sunday in Atlanta, the U.S. Golf Association announced. After today’s final round of the 36-hole stroke-play qualifier, the 64-man field will begin match play on Tuesday at Capital City Club’s Crabapple Course and conclude Friday, one day later than originally scheduled. Chad Wilfong, 37, of Charlotte, N.C., and Joshua Irving, 31, of Dallas shared the first-round lead at 3 under. Wilfong shot 67 at the Crabapple Course, and Irving shot 68 at Atlanta National Golf Club, a stroke-play co-host (scores: http://bit.ly/2xpxhhv).
