In 240 days, the USGA is going to tee it up at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, a course synonymous with Titanic, Hindenburg and the Great Chicago Fire as monumental disasters in world history.

Of course, no one died at Shinnecock on that Sunday, June 20, 2004, but the world as the USGA knew it would be changed forever. So, too, would the manner in which the organization contested its U.S. Opens.

A golf fan for all seasons

I enjoyed learning about the fall session for the men and women who are participating (“Fall golf matters to serious fans,” Oct. 13, http://bit.ly/2yMical). It seemed to indicate that hardcore fans kind of fall off the boat in the fall. I would disagree, to an extent.

I listen to SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio every day, even in the fall. I watch whatever golf I can find on network TV. It occurs to me, however, that the golf media industry also has gone lackluster in the fall.

1

Number of career LPGA victories for South Korean Jin Young Ko, who rallied after making two bogeys in her first three holes Sunday to win the KEB Hana Bank Championship in Incheon, South Korea. Ko, 22, a nine-time winner on the KLPGA, played holes 5-15 at Sky72 Golf Club’s Ocean Course in 6 under and shot 4-under 68. Her 19-under 269 total held off countrywoman Sung Hyun Park (68) by two strokes. In Gee Chun (69) placed third at 16-under 272 to complete a 1-2-3 sweep for South Korea (scores: http://bit.ly/1zkYSEX).

FROM THE INDUSTRY

K-Motion Interactive has secured its third patent related to athletic-training biofeedback, the company reported. K-Motion’s “Method and System for Athletic Motion Analysis and Instruction” addresses real-time training with sensors that teach athletes how to correct inefficient movement.

Oglebay and Great Lakes Brewing Co. will host a four-person Craft Beer Scramble at 11 a.m. Friday on the resort’s Jones Course at Speidel Golf Club in Wheeling, W.Va. The shotgun-start event costs $199 per four-person team and includes two 3-ounce tastings at three holes during the tournament plus a post-round 12-ounce beer and other prizes.
