Welcome to the Sanderson Farms Championship, the best little tournament on the PGA Tour.

The SFC is little only in relation to the rest of the Tour, which is populated with the FedEx Cup series, World Golf Championships, purses in excess of $6 million and the best golfers on the planet.

Yes, most of the world’s best are teeing it up in the WGC event in Shanghai this week, so the Sanderson Farms, with its $4.3 million purse, has the best of the rest who want to get their 2017-18 season rolling. Sometimes, smaller is better.

Check the ego and move up

Hector Fernandez has it exactly correct (“From the Morning Read inbox,” Oct. 24, http://bit.ly/2y2fMEs). Too many players – almost always men – have unrealistic expectations and want to play from “the tips” or “the blues” when they actually should pay more attention to the yardages on the card.

Golf needs to get past the stereotypical verbiage of “men’s” and “women’s” tees. Even “back” or “forward” tees don’t cut it. Guys (mostly) have to check their egos at the door to help speed up play.

Postponed: Tiger Woods’ DUI hearing, from today until Friday, according to The Associated Press. Woods, 41, was arrested May 29 in Jupiter, Fla., when police officers found him unconscious in his damaged Mercedes-Benz (“Woods needs help, and his life might depend on it,” May 31, http://bit.ly/2rFStwz). A toxicology report found that Woods had the active ingredient for marijuana, two painkillers and sleep and anti-anxiety drugs in his system, but no alcohol. Woods is scheduled to plead guilty to reckless driving and enter a diversion program. He would spend a year on probation, pay a $250 fine and attend DUI school, among other conditions.

Keeping score

FROM THE INDUSTRY
