Is Justin Rose a Hall of Famer?

Two weeks ago, the answer would have been categorically “No,” but a lot can happen in a fortnight.

With Sunday’s victory in the Turkish Airlines Open, Rose has won two consecutive tournaments on the European Tour and thrust himself into consideration for the World Golf Hall of Fame. It might seem disingenuous to place Rose, with 18 career worldwide victories, including the 2013 U.S. Open title, into the discussion for a shrine anchored with such pillars as Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Sam Snead and Peter Thomson.

An isolated incident

Why does the whole system need to be blown up because of a single event, involving one person, in one scholastic section of one state? (“Gender bias sidelines Massachusetts girl,” Oct. 26, http://bit.ly/2xpwWrg).

Look at this practically and not with a series of what-ifs.

1

Number of LPGA players to successfully defend a tournament title this season as China’s Shanshan Feng won her second consecutive Toto Japan Classic. Feng closed with a 4-under 68 for a 19-under 197 total at Taiheiyo Club’s Minori Course in Omitama City, Japan, and a two-stroke victory against Japan’s Ai Suzuki (68). Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist (66) placed third at 15-under 201, followed by American Lizette Salas (68) at 13-under 203 (scores: http://bit.ly/1zkYSEX). With her second title of the season and eighth of her LPGA career, Feng improves to fifth on the Race to CME Globe season standings with two events remaining (standings: http://bit.ly/2h6Ldmc).

Reported: That San Francisco’s Olympic Club will play host to the 2028 PGA Championship and the 2032 Ryder Cup, according to the San Francisco Chronicle’s Ron Kroichick. The news is expected to be announced Wednesday. The deal effectively removes Olympic, a host of five U.S. Opens, from U.S. Open consideration for the foreseeable future.

FROM THE INDUSTRY

Youth on Course has enabled juniors to play 100,000-plus rounds at $5 or less this year, the Pebble Beach, Calif.-based nonprofit reported. Membership has grown about 50 percent, to 30,000-plus, with operations at more than 700 courses.

1757 Golf Club in Dulles, Va., has been named the 2017 Public Golf Leader by the National Golf Course Owners Association, according to Billy Casper Golf, which manages the facility. The honor recognizes the club for its programs and efforts to promote golf in the mid-Atlantic region.
