When the USGA and the R&A jointly decided to outlaw the anchored putting stroke in May 2013, the governing bodies gave the players until January 2016 – when Rule 14-1b took effect – to find another way to putt.

It was thought that Bernhard Langer was playing in as many PGA Tour Champions events as he physically could in the interim in order to make as much money as he could because he just might retire when the ban took effect. Surely, he couldn’t putt with a conventional method after all this time.

Globalization fallout slams U.K.

In your article about the globalization of golf, you asked, in relation to the European Tour moving events out of Europe: “How does that affect fan interest back in Europe? It’s impossible to measure.” (“Golf globalization shortchanges U.S. fans,” Nov. 9, http://bit.ly/2zprwAK).

No, it isn't. The European Tour is chasing sponsor money from countries that most of us couldn't point to on a map and didn't exist 25 years ago, to the detriment of golf in Europe generally, and in the U.K. in particular.

Number of rounds in the 60s on a blustery Thursday at the Blue Bay LPGA tournament. Leader Ashleigh Buhai of South Africa shot 4-under 68 for a 9-under 135 total at Jian Lake Blue Bay Golf Club on Hainan Island, China, to lead local favorite Shanshan Feng (67) by one stroke after 36 holes. Buhai withdrew from her most recent tournament, the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia, and hadn’t competed for six weeks before that event. She owns two top-5 results this season but still seeks her first career victory (scores: http://bit.ly/1zkYSEX).

FROM THE INDUSTRY

PGA National Resort and Spa announced that its newly renovated Palmer Course will reopen for play today. The resort in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., hosts the PGA Tour’s annual Honda Classic on its Champion Course. Changes to the Palmer Course – adding tee boxes to improve playability, reseeding fairways with Celebration Bermudagrass, reshaping the 62 bunkers and rebuilding and regrassing the greens – were made in consultation with the late namesake’s Arnold Palmer Design Co.

Danzante Bay Golf Club, a Rees Jones design at Villa del Palmar Resort at Islands of Loreto in Baja California, Mexico, will complete its grand opening Dec. 8, officials announced. The course, part of a luxury master-planned community, debuted 11 holes late last year. The new seven holes will play as Nos. 2-8 in the completed routing.
