If the $1 million payout to the winner of the season-long Race to the CME Globe seems like a big deal to LPGA players, that’s because it is.

Although the LPGA has come a long way in a decade – after being battered by the Great Recession and some misguided administrative decisions – purses still are dwarfed by those offered on the PGA Tour.

Female golfers boost soft-goods sales

I just finished reading about how girls are increasingly taking up golf (“Girl power drives changing face of golf,” Nov. 15, http://bit.ly/2zGBFtb). That’s wonderful to see.

At our resort, women – mainly these girls’ moms – make up 50 percent of my pro shop soft-goods sales, thanks to our great merchandiser and just paying attention to what female golfers want.

Settled: By Bandon Dunes Golf Resort and corporate parent KemperSports, a sexual-misconduct lawsuit filed by an employee, Portland, Ore., TV station KGW reported, citing court documents. Darla Hamblin, the resort’s director of reservation services, sued then-general manager Henry Hickox and KemperSports, alleging sexual assault, harassment, discrimination, retaliation and negligence. She had sought $501,000 for emotional distress and damages. The trial had been set to begin Tuesday in Coos County Circuit Court. No details about the settlement were disclosed. KemperSports said Hickox is no longer employed by the company, KGW-TV reported. The resort on Oregon’s Pacific Coast has become one of America’s top golf destinations since opening in 1999.

Keeping score

20

Number of weeks that American Brandt Snedeker has been sidelined with an injured sternum. Snedeker, 36, an eight-time winner on the PGA Tour, has not played since he tied for 14th in the Travelers Championship on June 25. He has dropped from 32nd in the Official World Golf Ranking to 47th, his lowest ranking since the end of 2015. Snedeker will return to the Tour today in the first round of the RSM Classic at Sea Island (Ga.) Resort (tee times: http://bit.ly/2yDdrMu).

FROM THE INDUSTRY

The Golf Course Superintendents Association of America Golf Championships will be played Feb. 3-5 during the Golf Industry Show in San Antonio. The events will be played at five courses in the San Antonio area, including the AT&T Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio, home of the PGA Tour’s Valero Texas Open. The format includes a four-ball competition, a scramble and stroke play, with flights for gross and net scores.

Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Farmington, Pa., celebrated the end of its golf season, which was highlighted by the opening of the Shepherd’s Rock course. The 7,151-yard course is the second Pete Dye design at Nemacolin, joining Mystic Rock.

K-Motion Interactive introduced an online course to teach golf instructors how to read kinematic-sequence charts with the techniques used to train pilots for flight instruments and doctors to read X-rays. By understanding the kinematic sequence, coaches can identify inefficient movement and target drills to correct the motion.

Indian Wells (Calif.) Golf Resort was honored for its environmental stewardship, notably for water conservation. Indian Wells received the Community Environmental Award from the California Golf Course Owners Association.
