The Department of Justice’s move this week to block AT&T’s purchase of Time Warner shocked many analysts who follow mergers and acquisitions that require federal government approval.

Government opposition to a proposed deal involving two companies that are not direct competitors is rare. The last such DOJ case that was litigated to conclusion was in 1979, and the government lost.

History aside, the fact that the DOJ is trying to stop the sale has created ripple effects throughout the M&A industry, but it also could impact professional golf.

Davis Love III remembers the free boots. Texan Bob Estes still wears his pair. The Lucchese Boot Co. factory-outlet store remains the first stop when this year’s 30 contestants in the Sun Bowl All-America Golf Classic rolled into El Paso this week for the 43rd rendition. Golf fans might recall that Rose, a casual golfer and knowledgeable observer of the game, landed insightful interviews with newsmakers such as Tiger Woods, the late Arnold Palmer, Jordan Spieth and others in the game. In the wake of the allegations, Rose also had his eponymous interview show pulled from PBS and Bloomberg.
