About 20 years ago, Bill Yates was invited to make a presentation on pace of play at a golf business conference in Barrie, Ontario. When he saw the reaction from the audience of golf-course operators to his then-revolutionary suggestions, he thought, Hey, maybe I can make a living doing this.

I oppose these mega mergers, as the result is an adverse effect on the consumer (“AT&T/Time Warner deal could alter TV golf,” Nov. 22). Less competition allows price fixing, which as we all realize never favors the consumer.

As prices rise, two things happen. One, consumers perceive they have no choice and bite the bullet. Two, they distance themselves from the products, as they see them as unaffordable.

Deficit, in strokes, that Cameron Davis erased Sunday to win the Emirates Australian Open. Davis, 22, of Australia, closed with a 7-under 64 and 11-under 273 total at The Australian Golf Club in Sydney to edge countryman Matt Jones (68), the 2015 Aussie Open winner, and Sweden’s Jonas Blixt (68) by one stroke. Davis, Jones and Blixt also earned spots in the British Open via the Open Qualifying Series exemptions as the top three finishers not already qualified. Third-round leader Jason Day of Australia faded with a 2-over 73 to finish fifth at 8-under 276. American Jordan Spieth (67), who won the 2014 and ’16 Aussie Open titles, placed eighth at 6-under 278.
