When Tiger Woods was a kid, he had a picture of Jack Nicklaus on his bedroom wall. It wasn’t that Jack was Tiger’s hero or role model. Tiger looked to his father, Earl, for that.

The reason that Nicklaus’ was the last face Tiger saw before he closed his eyes at night was that Jack was the greatest player of all time, and if Tiger wanted to one day be the best, Nicklaus was the singular target.

Don’t expect Tiger circa 2000

My golf swing is the product of three back surgeries. I still play good golf but don’t hit it as far as I used to. I have made up for that by vast improvements in my short game from 50 yards in.

When your back gets cut, it gets repaired, but it is never whole again. Each time that happens, you lose a little more. I do not swing with the force that my muscles could apply because my spine cannot tolerate it. I am always unconsciously holding myself back a little bit to protect my spine. I’m more concerned about the 164 hours a week that I don’t play golf than the four that I do.
