One in a series of stories about pace of play

When does “faster” equate to “slower”?

Are golfers, who incessantly complain about pace of play, unintentionally causing slower rounds by insisting on faster greens?

Preliminary findings by the Science of the Green initiative at the University of Minnesota indicate that is true.

You might be your own worst enemy.

Welcome back, Tiger

I did not watch Tiger Woods and the first round of the Hero World Challenge. I checked in online on my PGA Tour app shortly after my round on Friday morning to see that the dude was 7 under. Who takes off two years and shoots 69-68? That’s amazing (“Woods turns back clock: ‘I did great’,” Dec. 1).

I always admired Woods’ prowess on the course and hated his behavior off of it. And, that was well before he was exposed (“Woods needs help, and his life might depend on it,” May 31).

Number of times in the 11-year existence of the Joburg Open, which begins Thursday in Johannesburg, that a South African has won the event. The list of countrymen to have won: Darren Fichardt (2017), Haydn Porteous (2016), George Coetzee (2014), Richard Sterne (2013, ’08), Branden Grace (2012) and Charl Schwartzel (2011, ’10). Dylan Frittelli, who won last week’s AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open, will seek to add his name to the list of South African winners as the Joburg Open moves to Randpark Golf Club after 11 years at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club. The tournament is tri-sanctioned by the European, Asian and Sunshine tours.

Relocated: The 2019 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship, from Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash., to Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Ore., the U.S. Golf Association announced Tuesday. The move was made to accommodate a turfgrass change at Chambers Bay, which will transition its greens from fescue to Poa annua. Chambers Bay, a 2007 Robert Trent Jones Jr. design, sits on the Puget Sound site of a former sand/gravel quarry. The course was widely criticized for its bumpy putting surfaces during the 2015 U.S. Open, which Jordan Spieth won when Dustin Johnson three-putted the 72nd hole from 12 feet. Chambers Bay will play host to the 2021 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball, the USGA said.
