I always will remember Charley Hull as the shy blond kid who summoned a lurching train of octogenarians to the back nine of Oceanside Country Club in Ormond Beach, Fla., for the painfully cold final round of the 2011 South Atlantic Amateur, aka the Sally.

Hull, the English girl who made an annual odyssey to Florida as a junior, finished second that day, gave a few thoughtful remarks, then continued to chart her way up the World Amateur Golf Ranking. At age 16, she turned professional in early 2013 and began racking up accolades and Solheim Cup starts. She kept opponents, teammates and media members in stitches with her say-anything attitude.

Good riddance to armchair officials

You are completely wrong in this article (“Pro tours hang up on armchair rules callers,” Dec. 12).

I believe the average fan is tired of the call-in “official.” It’s unfair to those who are in the lead during television time. What happens to the rules “infractions” to those who are not in front of a TV camera?

The beauty of golf is that the players continue to police themselves. In no other sport does a player call a penalty on himself. Too many times, the infractions called into the PGA Tour from armchair officials are ridiculous (see Craig Stadler, 1987, Torrey Pines, Rule 13-3, “Building Stance”).

Announced: By the R&A, that it will introduce a new amateur championship for female junior golfers. The inaugural Girls Under-16s Open Championship will be played April 27-29 in Fulford, England. The 54-hole event will feature 90 players. The R&A, which merged with the Ladies’ Golf Union this year and stages the LGU’s former events, also announced that the Ladies British Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship has been discontinued.
