April beckons. So does Tiger Woods.

CBS makes us salivate with those classic Masters Tournament commercials, so we’re ready for an avalanche of azaleas, magnolias and Amen Corner even before March Madness begins.

The PGA Tour exudes financial health when judged by the $363 million in prize money up for grabs this season, plus another $35 million or so in playoff bonus cash.

Yet, three tournaments – the Houston Open, Fort Worth Invitational and The National – lack sponsorship for the first time. All could be gone from the Tour when the 2019 schedule is announced in mid-May during the Players Championship.

Golf can do better on enforcing pace of play

I really don't care how long the PGA Tour professionals take to play golf. I am not leaning on a club waiting for them to hit the ball. And the broadcasters have learned to cut away to other players when a slow guy is gearing up to play.

Slow play affects me only when the group in front doesn't know how to play efficiently and the so-called course advisers do not do any advising.

Number of victories, in as many matches apiece, for Americans Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed, who will square off today in the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play at Austin (Texas) Country Club. In other matches involving unbeaten players through two days of pool play, American Justin Thomas will play Italy’s Francesco Molinari, American Xander Schauffele will meet Spain’s Sergio Garcia and American Tony Finau will oppose Sweden’s Alex Noren. The winners of the 16 four-man pools will advance to Saturday’s elimination rounds (scores and pairings).

Announced: By the Mackenzie Tour, its 13-tournament schedule for 2018 in Canada. The events, from late May to mid-September, will feature increases of CAD $25,000 to each regular-season purse, to CAD $200,000. Play begins with the May 31-June 3 Freedom 55 Financial Open in Vancouver, British Columbia. The winner of the tour’s Order of Merit earns full exemption to the Web.com Tour for 2019, with Nos. 2-5 gaining conditional status (“Canada unfurls northern route to big-time,” March 21).
