Let’s crack the code of the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass and figure out what kind of player might win here.

Playing from the short grass is key. How about a player who hits 73.5 percent of the fairways? Only Henrik Stenson, at 76.8 percent, finds more on the PGA Tour.

The Players Championship is inundated with rookies this week, with 20 first-timers preparing to experience architect Pete Dye’s egalitarian masterpiece.

American Bryson DeChambeau and France’s Alexander Levy are among the 144 who will get a chance not only to make history beginning today at TPC Sawgrass’ Stadium Course, but also take a big step toward earning a spot in the Ryder Cup.

That’s entertainment

I like Morning Read. I’ve been a subscriber from the start and continue to enjoy the daily online publication. It’s entertaining.

That’s why I was surprised with Alex Miceli’s choice to use the word in a derogatory fashion when saying that the Woods, Fowler and Mickelson grouping at the Players Championship this week was all about “entertainment” (“McIlroy’s candor counters Woods’ illusions,” May 9).

Withdrew: Paul Casey, from the Players Championship, citing a back injury. He was replaced by Keith Mitchell (tee times).
