The Dustin Johnson Classic will continue for 36 more holes here at Shinnecock Hills this weekend. It should be a good show because Johnson may do more than just forge history. He’ll attempt a feat far more difficult: making four rounds at Shinnecock look semi-easy.

One day after Shinnecock Hills overwhelmed the best golfers in the world, the storied William Flynn design laid down for the second round of the U.S. Open.

While World No. 1 Dustin Johnson, who leads at 4 under after 36 holes, and a few others passed the first half of the U.S. Golf Association’s examination, many others in the top 10 of the Official World Golf Ranking were headed home from the Hamptons (scores).

One problem with broadcasting 9½ hours of golf, especially when it’s at a network’s only televised PGA Tour event all year, is that the personnel can’t handle the workload. The best on-air talent can function at a peak level for only so long, so backups are needed. At the U.S. Open, Fox Sports doesn’t have a very deep bench.

Par excellence from Hawkins

John Hawkins hits a grand slam with his article concerning the U.S. Open (“Azinger gives Fox shot at gaining respect,” June 13).

It is my favorite tournament, when the greatest players on the planet must endure the most extreme conditions. I can watch the pros shoot 15 or 16 under every weekend. Watching the best try and grind out rounds of par is, in my opinion, what the U.S. Open should be about.

Number of amateurs, out of 20 entered, who made the 36-hole cut Friday at the U.S. Open. Will Grimmer (5 over), Matt Parziale (7 over) and Luis Gagne (7 over) advanced to weekend play at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y. (scores).
