Clichés die hard. And no, that’s not the title of the next Bruce Willis movie.

One cliché has taken more than three decades to fade. I heard it again last year in a charity outing when one member of our shaky scramble team double-hit a chip shot. Another member, a gray-haired older gent (not me) wearing Rickie Fowler orange shorts and a Puma cap, didn’t miss a beat. “T.C. Chen!” he chortled.

OK, enough already on Mickelson …

I have read with great patience the Mickelson bashing that has gone on in the Morning Read inbox, and other places, since the “incident” at the U.S. Open (“Mickelson, USGA disgrace U.S. Open,” June 17).

Mickelson surely had a lapse of judgment, and what he did was cloddish. Was it more than that? Disrespectful of the game? Warrant our collective ire and merit disqualification, then and maybe for a subsequent tournament or two? Many say “yes” to all of those questions.

Number of PGA professionals who qualified for the PGA Championship via the PGA Professional Championship late Wednesday at Seaside, Calif. Ryan Vermeer closed with a 1-over 73 at the Bayonet Course for a 5-under 283 total and two-stroke victory in the club pros’ national championship. Vermeer, 40, is the director of instruction at Happy Hollow Club in Omaha, Neb. The 100th PGA Championship will be played Aug. 9-12 at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis (scores).

Cordillera Ranch in Boerne, Texas, congratulated director of instruction Bryan Gathright after Mitchell Meissner, a recent Rice graduate and longtime Gathright pupil, won the Texas State Amateur. Two other Gathright students also finished T-3 or better: Levi Valadez placed second and McClure Meissner, Mitchell’s younger brother, tied for third.
