Boston and New York? They don’t always mix well together. Think oil and water. Mickey Rooney and marriage. The Red Sox and Yankees.

But come next summer, Boston and the New York metropolitan area will begin sharing a FedEx Cup playoff event. That’s right, a 50/50 custody split. Liberty National in New Jersey will be site of the opening 2019 playoff stop (The Northern Trust) next August, then it’s back to TPC Boston in 2020, off to New York’s Bethpage Black in ’21, etc. Rinse, repeat. Start the music, and swing yer new partner round and round.

The late Jarrod Lyle will be fondly remembered for a lot of things, including a riotous hole-in-one at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, his giving nature, his grit and grace through multiple battles with cancer, and also his sense of humor.

One of his favorite practical jokes was tweaking unsuspecting newcomers with his supposed first job back home in Australia before he became a successful professional golfer.

Shooting a hole into PGA Tour’s ‘trial balloon’
I strongly disagree with the trial balloon that the PGA Tour put out Monday (“Finally, Tour playoffs that make sense,” Aug. 28). This idea fixes nothing and goes in the wrong direction. I would prefer the current system.

Giving strokes to professional golfers within a singular event is the antithesis of the pro game, and I would argue professional sporting events in general. This isn't a match between club members who don't play as much as each other and need an outside leveling agent (handicap strokes) to have a good match.

Hired: Seth Waugh, as chief executive officer of the PGA of America, the PGA announced Tuesday. Last week, Morning Read previewed the anticipated announcement (“PGA’s hiring of Waugh would be bold step,” Aug. 24). Waugh, 60, a former CEO of Deutsche Bank Americas, has served for the past three years as an independent director on the PGA’s board. Since 2017, he has served as an adviser and managing director at Silver Lake, a technology-investment company. Waugh will guide the business and overall strategy at the PGA for its 28,000-plus professionals and associates (“PGA of America should merge with Tour,” Aug. 15). He replaces Pete Bevacqua, who resigned effective Aug. 13 to become president of NBC Sports (“Bevacqua’s exit leaves questions for PGA,” July 25).

Position in the European Ryder Cup ranking for Denmark’s Thorbjorn Olesen, who returns to his homeland seeking to remain among the eight automatic qualifiers for the team, which will be revealed after this week’s Made in Denmark event. Play begins Thursday at Silkeborg Ry Golf Club in Aarhus (tee times).

Hawk & Rude: The Match ’18
In Hawk & Rude, a podcast featuring veteran golf journalists John Hawkins and Jeff Rude, the hosts find plenty not to like about the Tiger Woods vs. Phil Mickelson pay-per-view match in November, all while sizing up Mickelson’s dwindling chances of making the U.S. Ryder Cup team.
