Among multimillionaire golfers or those nearly so, pressure is, of course, a relative thing. Having your season end a couple of weeks early sure isn’t like someone on the way up playing for a hundred bucks when all he has in his pocket is some lint and a couple of tees.

Loitering around a ranking bubble of one sort or another – as players are at the Dell Technologies Championship in the second event of the PGA Tour playoffs (tee times) – sure isn’t the worst place to be. Life can get better, depending on what happens this weekend and at the upcoming BMW Championship and Tour Championship. But make or miss, life is going to continue quite nicely for anyone who is laboring on Labor Day at TPC Boston or, for that matter, who packs up early Saturday evening after missing the cut.

Use match play to decide Tour Championship
I agree with Mark Harman (“From the Morning Read inbox,” Aug. 30) that the PGA Tour is making the playoffs concept far too confusing, and that the Tour should reduce the number of players eligible to win a season-long title.

But let's examine another concept, one that would make for better TV but is still based on traditional tournament golf (instead of head starts or naming two winners).

FedEx Cup ranking of the three players – Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson and Justin Thomas, respectively – in the 9:03 a.m. pairing today off the 10th tee in the PGA Tour’s Dell Technologies Championship at TPC Boston in Norton, Mass. The tournament, which concludes on Labor Day, is the second of four consecutive playoff events (tee times).

The Club at Tartan Fields has adopted a new name to emphasize that the facility in Dublin, Ohio, offers more than golf. In addition to its 1998 Arnold Palmer Design golf course, the former Tartan Fields Golf Club offers tennis, swimming and fitness, and it caters to special events and weddings. The club, an Arcis Golf property, also is undergoing a $2.1 million clubhouse renovation.
