The old band is getting back together. It’s official. Tiger and Phil. Phil and Tiger. Ah, the good old days.

Jim Furyk had to feel less like the U.S. Ryder Cup captain and more like Captain Obvious when he announced three of his four wild-card choices to add to the American side Tuesday afternoon. Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson joined Bryson DeChambeau, who missed qualifying for the team on points by one spot and since has won the past two big-deal FedEx Cup events. This was the easiest call since Richard Nixon over George McGovern.

On a day that was destined to be one of the most anticlimactic in Ryder Cup history, a nugget fell that was well worth coming to hear Jim Furyk name Bryson DeChambeau, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods as his first three captain’s picks.

After the obvious, Furyk announced that he had selected David Duval as a vice captain.

I just finished reading Adam Schupak’s informative and entertaining piece on the AJGA (“AJGA gives juniors taste of big-time golf,” Sept. 4).

I have volunteered several times at these events, and they are simply amazing in their quality of play and the extraordinary level of organization.

It is clear that the champions of today have all been battle-hardened and well-prepared for professional competition by their participation in these events.



Number of players to qualify for the 70-man BMW Championship every year since the event became part of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup playoffs in 2007. Phil Mickelson has played in all 11 BMWs, with a best finish of T-2 in 2012, behind Rory McIlroy. Mickelson ranks ninth in the FedEx Cup standings. The top 30 will advance from the BMW, which begins Thursday at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pa. (tee times), to next week’s Tour Championship in Atlanta.


Selected: France, as host of the 2022 World Amateur Team Championships, the International Golf Federation announced. Le Golf National, site of this month’s Ryder Cup, and Golf de Saint-Nom-La-Bretèche near Paris will be used for the biennial men’s and women’s events. The French Golf Federation also will play host to Olympic golfers when the 2024 Summer Games visit Paris.



Spokane, Wash., has commissioned Robert Trent Jones II Golf Course Architects to develop master plans for the four city-owned golf courses. The first plan, for Indian Canyon, will be introduced to the public for feedback on Sept. 28.


Bridgestone Golf congratulated Bryson DeChambeau for his second consecutive victory in the PGA Tour’s season-ending playoffs. DeChambeau played Bridgestone Golf’s Tour BX ball in winning the Dell Technologies Championship.


Lon Grundy has been appointed as general manager of golf operations at World Golf Village Resort in St. Augustine, Fla., according to Troon’s Honours Golf Division, which manages the property. World Golf Village is home to two courses, King & Bear and Slammer & Squire, adjacent to the World Golf Hall of Fame.


Nippon Shaft reported that its equipment was used by the winner of the recent LPGA’s Cambia Portland Classic. The champion played Nippon’s N.S. Pro 950GH steel shafts in her irons and wedges.


Arcis Golf has assumed operation of Tierra Rejada Golf Club in Moorpark, Calif., the management company reported. Arcis Advantage, the company’s management services division, will oversee the Bob Cupp-designed golf course.
