Rock bottom came on a chilly Sunday evening in late September, which had turned as dark as the moods of the U.S. Ryder Cup captain and his players. The Americans had just endured yet another thumping, losing the 2014 matches, 16½-11½, at Gleneagles in Scotland.

It wasn’t just another loss; it was one more stinging, utterly demoralizing defeat. The U.S. had lost three straight Ryder Cups, six of the past seven and eight of the past 10. Among the Americans, everyone involved was mad.

Number of major championships won by American Angela Stanford, who rallied to win the LPGA’s Evian Championship. Stanford, 40, posted her sixth career victory in her 436th start in her 18th season on tour. She closed with a 3-under 68 – including an eagle, double bogey and birdie on Nos. 15-17 – for a 12-under 272 total and one-stroke victory at Evian Resort in Evian-les-Bains, France. American Amy Olson, the third-round leader, made double bogey on the 18th hole for a final-round 74 and share of second place with fellow Americans Austin Ernst (68) and Mo Martin (70) and South Korean Sei Young Kim (72) at 11-under 273 (scores).
