Tiger Woods is not playing in this week’s season-opening PGA Tour event in Napa, Calif. Neither is Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, Rory McIlroy nor Justin Rose.

All of the big names, aside from Phil Mickelson, are catching their breath after the playoffs and Ryder Cup. That’s entirely understandable. So is the Safeway Open’s response: giving a sponsor exemption to former major-league pitcher Mark Mulder.

Big Max is still waiting in the bullpen. And by bullpen, I mean my garage. And by waiting, I mean gathering dust.

I live in Pittsburgh. It is not flat. Neither are most of its golf courses. So, I don’t play golf at many places where walking is a realistic option for me, because I’ve got a stem-cell bolstered knee and two neuropathy-sparking feet. I’d love to walk and carry my bag, or, even better, bring Big Max out of semi-retirement.

Lost: The sight in her right eye, Corine Remande, 49, who was hit in the face by a wayward Brooks Koepka drive Friday at the Ryder Cup, Agence France-Presse reported. Koepka pulled his tee shot on the par-4 sixth hole during a morning four-balls match at Le Golf National in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, France. The ball hit Remande, who was in the gallery. Koepka gave a bloodied Remande an autographed glove and offered his apology. She was treated at the scene and then hospitalized in Lyon, near her parents’ home, reportedly with a fractured eye socket.

Number of players on the four-woman South Korean roster for this week’s UL International Crown who are major champions and ranked among the top 30 players in the world. In fact, three of the four Koreans – No. 1 Sung Hyun Park, No. 3 So Yeon Ryu and No. 10 I.K. Kim – are among the top 10 in the Rolex Rankings. With the eight-team event being held at Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea in Incheon, the host South Koreans are heavily favored in the third biennial event, which begins Thursday.
