The USGA and R&A had good enough intentions when the two governing bodies agreed to simplify the Rules of Golf. And many of the changes that will take effect Jan. 1 are the result of some simple, common sense.

However, as you might expect from the USGA, some of the language is now different (details). This is the organization that brought you “hole locations” instead of pin placements. Water hazards will become “penalty areas,” and through the green will be called “general area.” Where you drop will be the “relief area,” and if you keep that spot between you and the hole, it’s called “back-on-the-line relief.”

Confirmed: By Johnny Miller, in an interview posted Monday night to GolfChannel.com, that he will retire as a golf analyst with NBC Sports early next year. The news first was reported Monday afternoon by Golfweek.com, which cited no sources. Miller, 71, spent 29 years as NBC’s lead golf analyst, building a reputation for sharp opinions that often tweaked the PGA Tour players.

Position in the Official World Golf Ranking for Australia’s Marc Leishman, an improvement of eight spots, after his victory in the CIMB Classic. Leishman is within four spots of his career high, achieved early this year after he won the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

Ping introduced the Sigma 2 putter series, the Phoenix-based equipment manufacturer announced. Pre-orders for the Sigma 2, which comes in 10 options and includes an adjustable-length shaft, started Monday at authorized Ping golf shops worldwide.

 

Cobra Golf announced the launch of the King Forged CB/MB irons. The clubs, designed for competitive players and built with input from PGA Tour player Rickie Fowler, come in cavity-back (CB) and muscle-back (MB) shapes. The irons will retail for $1,099 and be available beginning Nov. 2, according to the Carlsbad, Calif.-based manufacturer.

 

Golftec will offer one complimentary lesson or Tecfit club-fitting session to anyone who donates at least $35 to PGA HOPE, the company announced. The program serves as the primary military-engagement vehicle for PGA Reach, the charitable foundation of the PGA of America.

 

Nippon Shaft claimed victories on two major tours from the past weekend. The winner of the PGA Tour’s CIMB Classic played the N.S. Pro Modus Tour 130x steel shafts in his irons and wedges. The winner of the LPGA’s KEB Hana Bank Championship played N.S. Pro 950GH steel shafts in her irons and wedges.

 

Peakvision Sunglasses will host custom-fitting sessions for charity tournaments, the Conway, S.C.-based manufacturer announced. Sunglasses that retail for $130 per pair will be sold to the charity for $50 apiece. A selection of sunglasses then would be offered to tournament participants as a premium gift.

 

Spanish Wells Golf and Country Club is nearing completion of its $1.5 million renovation, the 27-hole club in Bonita Springs, Fla., announced. Work on the South and East courses includes new TifEagle Bermudagrass greens plus drainage and irrigation upgrades.

 

Princeville Makai will play host to 20 college men’s teams at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational in late October, the resort in Kauai, Hawaii, announced. Louisville returns with 2017 medalist Simon Zach as defending champion in the 54-hole event, to be played Oct. 28-30 at the Robert Trent Jones Jr.-designed course.

 

SubAir Systems will offer new financing options for its golf clients. In conjunction with PNC Equipment Finance, SubAir clients can secure 24-60-month terms on SubAir Systems and TurfBreeze fans. SubAir manufactures subsurface aeration and moisture-management systems that moderate and control subsoil environmental conditions.

 

Golf Life Navigators has entered into a partnership with Golf Channel’s Golf Advisor. GLN, which matches potential members with golf clubs in Florida, Arizona and the Carolinas, intends to tell its story to Golf Advisor’s audience of golfers.
