FRENCH LICK, Ind. – This was a big year for the older female golfers who used to labor on the LPGA tour. After years of campaigning, they had two major championships in which to compete during the 2018 season. Today, there is no doubt about who might be the best player.

England’s Laura Davies dominated. On Wednesday, she was a wire-to-wire winner in the second Senior LPGA Championship on the Pete Dye Course at French Lick Resort. In July, she won the inaugural U.S. Senior Women’s Open at Chicago Golf Club by a whopping 10 strokes. That’s a Grand Slam, as far as that age group and gender is concerned.

Purkey gets it right with call for drop on OB
I am in complete agreement with Mike Purkey on the ruling bodies' failure to change the out-of-bounds penalty (“Simplest rules fix of all: Allow drop on OB,” Oct. 16).

I told the USGA as much when it was asking for feedback on the proposed 2019 revised rules. The penalty received should not be dictated by where you happen to hit it sideways.

Golf has been endorsed as a means to counter physical inactivity and the prevention of many non-communicable diseases, according to leaders in public health, public policy and sports. Evidence linking golf and health was presented this week in London at the seventh congress of the International Society for Physical Activity and Health. The findings, commissioned by the World Golf Foundation, come months after the World Health Organization published its “Global Action Plan for Physical Activity.”
