The future of golf is here. His name is Cameron Champ. He averaged 343 yards per drive last season on the Web.com Tour, which I believe is terrible misuse of the word “averaged.”

Champ now competes on the PGA Tour, and he is going to obliterate every driving-distance record that the Tour has on the books. Remember how you oohed and aahed about Rory McIlroy leading the tour in driving distance last year at 319 yards per blast? Champ typically hit it 24 yards past McIlroy, or about the length of a good-sized convenience store.

Mickelson thrills with go-for-broke style
I must admit that I, too, found the harsh criticism of the John Hawkins article surprising, and I also am surprised by what seems to be so much animosity toward Phil Mickelson (“Mickelson nears end, but does he know it?” Oct. 25).

One cannot deny that Mickelson likely is not the player he once was, but few of us are, save for in our own minds.

1

Number of victories on the PGA Tour, in nine career starts, for American Cameron Champ, who won the Sanderson Farms Championship on Sunday. Champ, 23, a Texas A&M alumnus from Sacramento, Calif., shot 4-under 68 on Sunday at Country Club of Jackson (Miss.) for a 21-under 267 total and four-stroke victory.

Died: Willie McRae, who caddied at Pinehurst (N.C.) Resort for nearly 75 years, on Sunday, the resort announced. He was 85. No cause of death was disclosed. McRae looped for commoners and celebrities alike, from resort guests to U.S. presidents to golf’s superstars. He started in 1943 at $1.75 per round, plus a 50-cent tip.

FROM THE INDUSTRY

Kevin Merry and John Glenn, golf professionals in the United Kingdom, have developed a color-coded system of visually simplified golf instruction. Color Path Golf, which is being used by 70-plus coaches in the U.K., places shapes in the four primary colors on the ground to provide a simple and clear path for the swing.

Golfers with physical and intellectual impairments are eligible for the 2nd U.S. Disabled Open Golf Championship. The 36-hole event will be played May 15-16 at Independence Golf Club in Richmond, Va.
