A note from the future:

Golf is an individual sport. We all know that. But my victory at the 2019 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach this weekend was truly a team effort. (I saw three writers wince when I dropped that cliché in the news conference, but too bad; it’s the truth.)

I know nobody expected me, little-known Cody Joe Blue of Branson, Mo., to win America’s National Open. I surprised even myself with the best golf of my life. Still, this was a win for all of Team Blue.

Mickelson’s reputation will be ‘forever tarnished’
Like many others, I once rooted for and admired Phil Mickelson (“Mickelson nears end, but does he know it?” Oct. 25).

He chose the wrong time and place to blast U.S. captain Tom Watson after the 2014 Ryder Cup, but Mickelson was basically correct, so he gets a pass. But his nonsense at the U.S. Open was a complete disgrace and inexcusable (“Mickelson, USGA disgrace U.S. Open,” June 17). And his attempt to justify it was ridiculous. He should've been DQ'd or withdrawn, but of course, he wasn't. And then he made a further mockery of the incident with his actions on the same hole the next day, showing no class or remorse whatsoever. That pretty much did it for me.

Released: By the European Tour, the 2018-19 schedule, which features 48 tournaments in 31 countries across five continents. (The European Tour counts the four World Golf Championships and the four major championships as part of its schedule, as does the PGA Tour.) The European Tour’s season begins with the Honma Hong Kong Open on Nov. 22-25 and ends with the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai on Nov. 21-24, 2019.

32

Position in the Rolex Rankings, an improvement of seven spots, for American Nelly Korda after she won the Swinging Skirts LPGA Taiwan Championship. Korda, 20, is the eighth-ranked U.S. player in the world, but she’s gaining on older sister Jessica, who is ranked 12th.

FROM THE INDUSTRY

Officials at the Patriot All-America Invitational saluted Cameron Champ for his first PGA Tour victory, less than 22 months after the former Texas A&M player won the 2016 Patriot title. Champ won the Sanderson Farms Championship on Sunday. The Patriot All-America, in its eighth year, will be played Dec. 29-31 at Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park, Ariz. The tournament brings together All-Americans from the three NCAA divisions, plus NAIA and NJCAA and schools outside of the U.S.

Cobra Golf launched the 2019 King F9 Speedback line of drivers and fairway woods, the company announced. The clubs will be available at retail and online beginning Jan. 18. The driver will retail for $449, and the fairway wood is priced at $269.

PGA National Resort and Spa introduced Perry Baldwin as its director of sales. Baldwin brings 25-plus years of experience in the hospitality industry to the resort in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., which is home to the PGA Tour’s annual Honda Classic.

Boca Lago Country Club in Boca Raton, Fla., has teamed with nearby Hilton Boca Raton Suites to offer a stay-and-play package. Starting Nov. 22 and through 2019, the deal will be available for member-for-a-day guests on the recently renovated golf course at the private club.
