He’s only 25 years old. It’s important to remember that … and so easy to forget.

Easy, because since the arrival of Tiger Woods in the late 1990s, golf has not had a more compelling presence than Jordan Spieth. The game was in a tailspin. Woods was losing his teeth, his glutes, his girlfriend, his game and his relevance. The sport was lacking continuity.

But the odds of grabbing a foothold in the golf-equipment business, dominated primarily by the “core four” behemoths – Titleist, TaylorMade, Callaway and Ping – are about as good as winning the Mega Millions lottery.


Witness to a wondrous feat, III times over
What a wonderful article on Charles Howell III and the RSM (“Howell finds merit in persistence on Tour,” Nov. 20). My wife and I attended the event on Wednesday and Saturday. We listened to the play by play on Sunday on the long trek back to New Hampshire.

Jeff Babineau’s article perfectly captured the facts and spirit of Howell’s dramatic victory.


Settled: A 2013 lawsuit filed by Vijay Singh against the PGA Tour, alleging “public humiliation and ridicule” during an investigation into his use of a banned substance. No terms were disclosed. The case was scheduled to go to trial next week in New York.

Salish Cliffs Golf Club in Shelton, Wash., will play host to the first of three winter better-ball tournaments, beginning Dec. 9 with a 10 a.m. shotgun start. The tournaments are open to men and women in two-person teams, with a portion of the entry fees benefitting the Folds of Honor Foundation. The other events will be Jan. 26 and March 2 at the club, which is part of the Little Creek Casino Resort.


The winner of the European Tour’s recent Race to Dubai played Lamkin grips, the manufacturer reported. He used Lamkin’s TS1 model to claim the tour’s season-long honor.


Short Par 4 has launched an e-commerce website created specifically for members of the golf-inspired box subscription service. Special membership deals will be part of the Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday programs. Short Par 4 ships brand-name golf apparel, accessories and gear to members.


The Reserve Club in Indian Wells, Calif., is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a clubhouse renovation and other upgrades to the property. To coincide with the occasion, the club has scheduled numerous special events for members and their guests. The clubhouse is set for an official reopening in January.
