In 1979, the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf was in its second year as a made-for-TV event cooked up by television impresario Fred Raphael. It featured golf’s top stars who were too old to compete on the PGA Tour.

It was harmless-enough nostalgia. But the results of this better-ball partners tournament caught the viewing public unawares, and fans ended up delighted. Julius Boros and Roberto De Vicenzo beat Art Wall and Tommy Bolt on the sixth hole of a playoff, sparked by exchanges of birdies and chock-full of competitive, if good-natured, finger-pointing.

Once a Marine, always a Marine. I learned this truth when I interviewed a veteran a few months back and referred to him as an “ex-Marine.” He quickly corrected me.

“There are no ex-Marines,” he said matter-of-factly. “Just Marines.”

 


Should a top-10 player go 0 for 56?
The latest world rankings just came out, and Tony Finau is ranked as the ninth-best player in the world.

Since the start of 2017, Finau has played in 56 worldwide events and has won none of them. Yet, during that 56-tournament winless streak, his position in the Official World Golf Ranking has climbed from 88th at the start of 2017 to ninth today.

 


Confirmed: By the PGA of America, that it will move its headquarters to Frisco, Texas, by mid-2022. The PGA, which represents approximately 29,000 club professionals, has been located in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., since 1965. The PGA’s new home will anchor a $520 million mixed-use development north of Dallas. Plans call for two courses that will host major-championship golf, notably the 2027 and 2034 PGA Championships, two Senior PGAs, two Women’s PGAs and possibly a Ryder Cup.

Number of South African major champions who will be playing in this week’s South African Open, which begins Thursday at Randpark Golf Club in Johannesburg. Ernie Els, a four-time major champion and World Golf Hall of Fame inductee, will join countrymen Trevor Immelman, Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel as headliners at their national open, which is co-sanctioned by the European and Sunshine tours (tee times).

The Troon Challenge National Finals will be played this weekend at Troon North Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., Troon officials announced. Two-person teams that qualified in net and gross divisions at regional sites will represent their home clubs. Play will be held Saturday at Troon North’s Pinnacle Course and Sunday at the Monument Course.

 

Bay Hill Club & Lodge in Orlando, Fla., has been named to the “Top 50 Golf Clubs of America” list for 2019-20 by the Platinum Clubs of America. The biennial recognition goes to only 4 percent of private clubs in America, according to officials at Bay Hill.

 

Ben Anderson, the golf course superintendent at Arrowhead Country Club in Montgomery, Ala., has been named winner of the Grassroots Ambassador Leadership Award. The Golf Course Superintendents Association of America presents the award quarterly to individuals who advance the GCSAA’s agenda with a member of Congress. The winners will receive a trip to participate in the 2019 National Golf Day on May 1 in Washington.

 

Brian Youell, the golf course superintendent at Uplands Golf Club in Victoria, British Columbia, has been named winner of the Leo Feser Award. The award recognizes the author of the best superintendent-written article published in the previous year in Golf Course Management, which is published by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America.

 

Golftec has been recognized by Golf Digest on the magazine’s list of the “100 Best Club Fitters in America.” Golftec has 36 centers listed in the magazine’s December/January issue.
