The biggest hurdle of my first year coaching high school girls golf was in learning to talk about the game to beginners. I write about golf for a living, but with 15-year-olds, I was a little bit lost.

There’s a lesson in there about nuances of the game, but there are far more of them than I had ever considered. Golf being “a game of honor” certainly falls into that category. To a certain extent, that explains why honesty can be an issue in high school golf.

Good clubs can do only so much for a golfer
Cheers to reader Bill Hutchins and his comments regarding the performance of various clubs, be they hot new technology or 20-year-old beaters (“From the Morning Read inbox,” Jan. 11).

I have the pleasure of watching my golf-professional son play each year with the hottest and most advanced products on the market. As he has moved positions, he has found himself playing with a host of the leading manufacturers’ clubs. Each new set elicits songs of joy and praise for a period of time and then equal sounds of dismay when suddenly they don't seem to work as well.

Number of victories this season on the PGA Tour for American Matt Kuchar, who pulled away from the field for a four-stroke triumph Sunday at the Sony Open in Hawaii. Kuchar closed with a 4-under 66 for a 22-under 258 total at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu. Kuchar, 40, the 54-hole leader, birdied three of his final four holes – after having bogeyed three of his first five – to clinch his ninth Tour title. He won the Mayakoba Golf Classic in November during the fall portion of the wraparound schedule. Andrew Putnam shot 68 and placed second at 18-under 262 (scores).

The Astros Golf Foundation is paying for the renovation, to be overseen by architect Tom Doak and scheduled for a Nov. 1 completion.
