It was a beautiful fall Sunday afternoon as the Europeans celebrated one of their biggest Ryder Cup victories in the event’s modern era.

The 17½-10½ drubbing of Uncle Sam’s boys was the result of a combination of factors, but one big key was the host course. Le Golf National performed just as the Europeans had hoped, frustrating the Americans at every turn.

Eight months from his 60th birthday, Fred Couples returns to the PGA Tour this week. He wrangled a spot in the Genesis Open thanks to a sponsor’s exemption, but he’s going to Los Angeles with some reservations.

“I probably should go to Naples [Fla., for the Champions Tour’s Chubb Classic],’’ he said. “Sounds like bragging, but I won Naples a couple times [2010 and 2017] and still want to play in L.A. Riviera is one of my favorite events.’’


Pebble’s pricey Pacific premium
If the course at Pebble Beach were moved inland – say, 30 miles – would you pay the $500 or so as presently charged to play it? In other words, does the layout command the price, or do the views command the price?

I suspect that no one would pay $500 to play the course without the views. If so, then when I hear how great the course is, people don't mean the holes are that remarkable, but the views are.

Rafael Barajas has been elected to a one-year term as president of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, officials announced Feb. 7 at the GCSAA’s annual meeting. Barajas is the superintendent at Boca Grove Golf & Tennis Club in Boca Raton, Fla. Barajas, a 33-year member of the GCSAA, recently had been the association’s vice president.


Golf Channel announced a multi-year deal to televise the Western Intercollegiate, the nation’s longest-running college men’s golf tournament. The 73rd edition of the Western, which is hosted by San Jose State, will be played April 15-17 at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, Calif. Golf Channel will air primetime coverage at 7-10 p.m. ET on April 15-16 and 4-7 p.m. ET on April 17.


Mission Inn Resort & Club announced its “Blast & Cast” package to highlight the outdoors options at the resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. In addition to its El Campeon and Las Colinas golf courses, Mission Inn also features a trap-and-skeet range onsite and fishing at the adjacent 76,000-acre Harris Chain of Lakes. Pricing for the package starts at $157 per night, per person, double occupancy.


Circling Raven Golf Club will celebrate its 15th anniversary this season with a stay-and-play package for the golf course and the Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort Hotel in Worley, Idaho. Prices start at $223 per person, per night and are good from early April until May 23.
