Francesco Molinari has found a winning formula. Before Molinari claimed the Quicken Loans National and hoisted the Claret Jug at the British Open in July, I asked the Italian what had been holding him back from claiming the top prize when he got in the trophy hunt. He had won four times on the European Tour, but he had failed to win in his first 120 PGA Tour starts. Molinari, a renowned ball-striker, paused and gave a thoughtful answer.

“The long game can take you only so far,” he said. “You can be in contention and have good finishes more often than other people, but when it comes to crunch time, you have to make the putts at the right time.”

American sportswriting lost a legend when Dan Jenkins died last week. I don’t know who’s the second-best golf writer in history, but No. 1 is an easy call: Jenkins. He was wickedly funny and insider-smart.

I’ll miss him, but at least we’ve still got his words. So, here’s a Dan Jenkins sampler, my ranking of his 10 best books. I can’t think of a better tribute. Your list might be completely different, of course, but that’s fine. It just means you’re wrong.

Steve Stricker owns a checkered past on the PGA Tour. He has struggled at times and then reaffirmed his position among the game’s elites.

In his 29-year professional career, Stricker has experienced more ups and downs than many of his PGA Tour colleagues. At 52, he has recorded 12 wins among 108 top 10s. Though it’s not a Hall of Fame career even in this watered-down era of induction, Stricker finds himself in elite company as U.S. captain for the 2020 Ryder Cup.

Repeat after me: New drop is not that hard
It's dangerous to speak for someone else. However, at a four-day PGA/USGA rules workshop in January, a USGA official explained the USGA/R&A process in selecting a new dropping height.

Initially, a ball was to be placed, but the R&A objected. A compromise was negotiated for a height of one-half inch, which was published for comments from the general public. After receiving those comments, knee height was chosen.

Retired: Effective at the end of the spring season, Herb Page, after 41 years as men’s coach at Kent State. Under Page, the Golden Flashes won 22 Mid-American Conference titles and appeared in 18 NCAA Championships, including four top-10 finishes.
