AUGUSTA, Ga. – Do you remember the scene at last year’s Masters Par 3 Contest when, in a span of about 25 seconds, Tony Finau rode the emotional wave of making an ace with his entire family there to see it, to wildly celebrating, to that cringe-worthy roll that dislocated his left ankle and ensuing pop-it-back-in moment, to then hobbling back toward the tee, suddenly uncertain about his first Masters?

Dumb question. Of course you remember it. Finau does, too. He is asked about it pretty much daily at golf tournaments, the way Justin Thomas gets asked about Jordan Spieth and Brooks Koepka gets asked about his European Challenge Tour days. Finau’s glory-to-fail moment lives on in YouTube lore, right up there with “Charlie Bit My Finger.”

Monday at the Masters begins one of the most anticipated weeks on the golf calendar.

Two college freshmen, Texas’ Cole Hammer and Wake Forest’s Alex Fitzpatrick, hope their futures include walking inside the ropes and plying their trade at some point at Augusta National Golf Club. Today, they will have to be content with walking outside the ropes as a benefit of playing at the recent Augusta Haskins Award Invitational (scores).

The loudest roars at Augusta National Golf Club tend to come on the second nine in Sunday’s final round of the Masters.

For the first time in Augusta National’s storied history, the cheers echoed among the pines on the second nine on the Saturday before Masters week. And a woman, Jennifer Kupcho, was the target of the adulation as she won the inaugural Augusta National Women’s Amateur (scores).

The end is nigh
After watching the Augusta National Women’s Amateur and the Drive, Chip and Putt events from Augusta National Golf Club over the weekend, I can only assume that future pace of play – and golf in general – is doomed.

Never have I seen such deliberation, dillydallying and over-analyzing in my life over each shot. If this is what is being taught, condoned and accepted by the golfing world as normal pace of play, there will not be enough daylight in a day to finish 18 holes.

Number of victories on the PGA Tour for Corey Conners, who won the Valero Texas Open on Sunday. Conners, 27, a Canadian, flipped the script after he seemingly faded from the hunt with four consecutive bogeys to finish his front nine at TPC San Antonio’s AT&T Oaks course. Conners birdied six of his final nine holes to shoot 6-under 66 and post a 20-under 268 total, edging American Charley Hoffman (67) by two strokes.

Canceled: The final round of the PGA Tour Series China’s Sanya Championship after competitor Arie Irawan was found dead at his hotel room in Sanya, on the southern tip of China’s Hainan Island. According to a Tour news release, Irawan, 28, of Malaysia is suspected to have died of natural causes, but the coroner’s report had not been completed.
