Feel good for the PGA of America. The folks in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., moved their signature event from mid-August to mid-May, beginning this year, and their timing could not be better. It’s like having James Holzhauer pinch-hit for you on “Jeopardy!”

No event will benefit from the recent “Miracle on Magnolia Lane” – Tiger Woods’ victory at the Masters – more than the PGA Championship. That’s because the PGA is no longer “Glory’s Last Shot.” It’s “Glory’s Next Shot,” May 16-19 at Bethpage Black. The steroid injection that the golf industry received at Augusta, and the orgasmic media response surrounding it, will resonate most immediately at the next major.

The measure of a golf course is the quality of its champions. Using that as a yardstick, Quail Hollow Club takes its place among the iconic venues of the PGA Tour. The site of this week’s Wells Fargo Championship, Quail Hollow has made a steady rise through the ranks of highly-regarded Tour courses, culminating with hosting the 2017 PGA Championship. And the Charlotte, N.C., club will welcome many of the best players in the world at the 2021 Presidents Cup.

Jason Day is the defending champion at the Wells Fargo, and he is one of eight major champions who have won at Quail Hollow, including Justin Thomas, who posted his first major triumph at the PGA two years ago.

An Exotics driver by Tour Edge set a world record for longest drive ever in competition by a woman when Exotics staff player Phillis Meti hit a monster 413 yard drive live on Golf Channel with an Exotics EXS Driver. Meti actually hit two world record setting drives in a row with the Exotics EXS driver; a 408-yard drive preceded the 413 blast.

In search of ‘legends’ and ‘champions’
If the Champions Tour limited the field to “legends,” then you would have an event with maybe 24 players (“Legends of Golf fails to live up to its name,” April 26). That would not work. So, the term “legends” is off the mark.

They now call the former Senior Tour the Champions Tour. How many players on the tour never won a PGA Tour regular event? I did not count, but it is probably double digits.

Declined: To play in this week’s Wells Fargo Championship, Tiger Woods. The decision likely means that Woods will not play a tournament between his Masters victory on April 14 and the PGA Championship in two weeks.

Number of strokes by which American Ryan Palmer and Spain’s Jon Rahm won the PGA Tour’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Palmer, 42, and Rahm, 24, teamed to shoot 3-under 69 in alternate-shot play Sunday at TPC Louisiana in Avondale, La., to post a 26-under 262 total.
