Back in the day, John Daly was a walking news story, a magnet for attention drawn from a life of sheer extremes. Winning majors, losing wives, gaining weight, losing at the casino, hitting it a mile when a mile still meant something…. Every aspect of Daly’s existence seemed to come in nothing smaller than an XXL.

As any headline writer will tell you, size does matter.



Woods certainly rates as American cultural icon
A great many people are weighing in on Tiger Woods, who recently was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom (“From the Morning Read inbox,” May 8). I took the time to research who has been awarded this honor in the past, and it includes some of the greatest American icons in sports, theater, song, art and literature.

To exclude Tiger Woods would be just plain vindictive.

The Inn at Bay Harbor, the flagship property for Boyne Golf, has received an Editors’ Choice Award by Golf Digest magazine in the category Best Golf Resorts in the Midwest. The inn is located on Lake Michigan in Bay Harbor, Mich.


Omega will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing with a display at next week’s PGA Championship. The Omega boutique in the Championship Shops at Bethpage State Park’s Black Course in Farmingdale, N.Y., also will feature the watchmaker’s Seamaster Aqua Terra Golf Collection.


The average salary of a golf course superintendent rose to $93,176 in 2019, according to a recent study by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America. The GCAA’s Compensation and Benefits Report found a 4.5-percent increase since the previous study, in 2017.


PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., has announced its “Summer Escape and Play Unlimited Golf Package.” Prices start at $96.50 per person, per night, double occupancy, from May 24 through Sept. 30, and include golf, breakfast and lodging, plus other perks.


Puma Golf has introduced its Warning Pack collection of apparel and gear in time for next week’s PGA Championship. The “warning” name is a nod to the cautionary sign on the first tee at Bethpage State Park’s Black Course in Farmingdale, N.Y., site of the PGA, that cautions players about the difficult test that awaits them.
